Food, Water, Housing Top Priorities for Haitians

UMNS Report

By Kathy Gilbert

January 27, 2010—Food. Potable water. Shelter.

Those are the top needs a group of 29 church and community leaders told three executives from the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Asked which is the most important, the group said all three.

The Jan. 12 earthquake left Mellier, about 80 kilometers from Port-au-Prince, without safe houses, churches, schools, businesses and basic needs. Because most of the attention of the humanitarian aid has focused on the capital city, not much help has reached more than 3,000 in this town and another 7,000 in the surrounding area.

Community leaders met with UMCOR in the shade of an almond tree on wooden benches and pews salvaged from their destroyed Methodist church and school. Children played while adults and youth talked about the desperate state they are in since the earthquake.

Melissa Crutchfield and Sharad Aggarwal, executives with UMCOR, and the Rev. Edgar Avitia Legarda, executive with the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, listened in an effort to assess needs and develop a plan to provide relief.

“The community participates from the very beginning,” Aggarwal said. “In Mellier they have told us what their priorities are so we are not imposing what we think they need on them. That is what we do in all our programming for UMCOR. The community helps us determine what their needs are.”

OPEN DOOR WINTER SESSION JAN. 13-FEB. 10

MOMENTUM D.R.I.V.E.

Come back to St. Andrew UM Church mid-week for 5 consecutive Wednesdays, beginning January 13. Our "Open Doors" Session offers a catered dinner in New Fellowship Hall at 5:30 pm ($7.00 per person/$20 maximum per family), followed by contemporary worship in our sanctuary at 6:30 pm, then classes for all ages at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Classes for children and youth include: Nursery (ages 3 and under); K to 3; Junior Youth /fellowship (JYF); and Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF).

Classes for adults include:

"Spirituality from a Wesleyan Perspective" This class will give an overview of Methodist spirituality and history. While this class is a great introduction to those desiring to join St. Andrew, it will also be very informative to those seeking to know more about our Methodist heritage. This class will be lead by Pastor Mark Fieger.

"Momentum for Life" Based upon the book by UM Mega-Church Pastor Rev. Michael Slaughter, this will be an intensive practical devotional series aimed at deepening our faith and discipline by building 'momentun' in our lives towards a fuller life in Christ. We will follow his acronym DRIVE: (D)evotions; (R)eadiness for lifelong learning; (I)nvesting in key relationships; (V)ision; and (E)xercise and healthy living. Each week we will share about and discuss our daily lives in terms of these five items and begin to build useful practices into our lives reflecting the DRIVE and momentum we want to build. Sign-up is required; a signed covenant is required (we will covenant together on the first night); reading the book is required; daily exercises and reflections will be part of the weekly "homework". The nature of this group will be to practice discipline as mucfh as learn and discuss new material and information, therefore, those who sign up will be expected to participate fully...this is not a casual study. This class will be lead by Pastor Erik Hall.
